Antique Venetian "Blackamoor" from beginning 20th Century

This figure is a classic example of Blackamoor art, which emerged in Europe, particularly in Italy and Venice, during the Renaissance and Baroque periods (15th to 18th centuries). Blackamoor figures typically depict African or Moorish individuals in exotic, lavish costumes often featuring turbans, jewelry and opulent fabrics.  They were crafted as decorative sculptures, furniture supports, candleholders and trays, like the one shown here.
